Basic, but sometimes overlooked, SGI hardware info O2 1600SW Display The O2 is well known for being paired with the 1600SW display, an uncommon, early wide-format LCD monitor. The down side is that the 1600SW requires a specific and unique digital adapter board that was purpose-made only for the 1600SW. All O2s can have this adapter board installed, as long as you are running IRIX 6.5.2 or later. Native support for the 1600SW only exists for the O2, or 320/540 workstations, though the digital adapter boards are different. The part number for the O2 adapter board is 030-1170-001. Keyboard and Mouse Any standard PS/2 keyboard and mouse/trackball will work. USB to PS/2 adapters MOSTLY do NOT work, so the best bet is to just use a PS/2 keyboard and pointing device. Thankfully there were millions made, and there are lots of choices for high quality mechanical keyboards and optical pointing devices. Drives not recognized One oddity with some O2 systems is that they will not recognize their hard drives after power-on, even though spin up and are known good. Assuming the drive IS known good, and has an OS installed, this might be solved by a simple re-seating process: - Power off the system - Remove the power cord, keyboard, mouse, and video cables - Remove the power supply (Do NOT skip this step!) - Remove the drive - Remove the system board - While the system board is out, GENTLY clean the contacts with a pencil eraser - Re-seat/re-insert everything above, starting at the bottom with the system board. - Do not reconnect power until everything has been put back together. There are reports that re-seating the system board with power applied may damage the board. |
